Introducing the Subaru Wilderness Trim

2024 Subaru Outback
Opting for the Wilderness trim gives you serious off-road upgrades you won’t find on other models. You’ll get options such as rugged underbody protection, aggressive off-road tires, and off-road drive modes to handle the roughest terrain.
In addition, Subaru added more rugged design cues, such as reinforced roof rails, protective cladding, an aggressive front fascia, and an off-road hood decal. If you love leaving the pavement in the rearview mirror, the Wilderness option will take you anywhere.
Wilderness Features and Enhancements
You wouldn’t venture off the road without a capable drivetrain. That’s where Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD comes in. In front- and rear-drive vehicles, you find excessive loads on the drive wheels, which can cause the car to shift to the outer side of the drive wheels.
AWD systems balance the power output evenly between all four wheels for more stable handling. AWD also improves acceleration with more wheels providing power. What makes Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD special is its design, which allows it to sit lower. A lower center of gravity creates more stability when cornering or traversing uneven terrain. The reinforced roof rails let you carry heavier gear and add modifications such as a roof-top tent so you can sleep off the ground away from critters and water. In addition, you get a rugged front skid plate to protect your drivetrain and other critical mechanical parts.
Adventure-Ready Performance
The drivetrain on Wilderness models features selectable drive modes, including X-MODE, a dual-functioning system with settings for Dirt/Snow and Deep Snow/Mud. These modes tune the throttle, steering, and suspension systems for maximum traction over various road surfaces and weather conditions. The off-road matte black hood decal reduces glare to help you see more clearly.
Wilderness models have longer coil springs and shock absorbers tuned for performance in all conditions. That means when on the trail, the longer suspension keeps your Subaru’s tires in contact with the ground more than other vehicles. Subaru has also tuned the shock absorbers for better damping, smoothing out the bumps on and off the road.
Realizing that overlanding adventures can lead to underbody damage, Subaru has lifted the Wilderness model to over 9 inches of ground clearance. Subaru also designed the aggressive front fascia to aid in clearing obstacles. Plus, you have increased approach, break-over, and departure angles with Wilderness models.
For example, the Crosstrek Wilderness can climb an obstacle at up to a 20-degree angle without hitting the front bumper. That’s two degrees more than other Crosstrek models. And the Crosstrek Wilderness can descend to flat ground at up to a 33-degree angle without letting the rear bumper hit the ground. That’s 2.9 degrees more than other Crosstrek models.
The break-over angle represents the maximum ramp angle a vehicle can climb without touching the underbody. The Crosstrek has a 21.1-degree break-over angle, up 1.4 degrees over standard trims, thanks to the lift and suspension.
In addition, Subaru equips the Wilderness models with exclusive 17-inch matte black alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDER all-terrain tires and a full-size spare.
Interior Comfort and Versatility
Just because you want to get away from civilization, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice comfort. Spacious cabins come outfitted with StarTex upholstery. StarTex is Subaru’s synthetic material with the beauty of leather and enhanced durability.
Wilderness models have signature contrast stitching and Anodized Copper accent trim. The StarTex upholstery’s honeycomb design is water-repellent because Subaru knows not every adventure you have is from inside your Subaru.
Subaru adds thoughtful features throughout the cabin, such as a heated steering wheel and an LED cargo lamp that helps you get your gear loaded when your adventure ends after the sun goes down. Flexible fold-down rear seating adds more cargo space and lets you configure your cabin to fit equipment or people.
Safety and Technology
Every Wilderness model comes standard with Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite. This system uses advanced sensors and radar to scan around your Subaru for problems, optimizes your cruise control, and helps keep you focused and in your lane.
Systems include Automatic Pre-Collision Braking that recognizes a potential accident and alerts you. If you react slowly, the system will provide additional brake support up to full braking force to bring you to a stop quickly.
Your in-vehicle tech runs through Subaru’s 11.6-inch touch screen powered by the Subaru STARLINK system. STARLINK comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto pre-loaded for your convenience. You can make calls, answer texts, access navigation information, stream your favorite music, and more hands-free when you sync your smartphone.
