Subaru, along with other automakers, traditionally introduces a full redesign of popular models every five or six years. The last time we saw an overhaul of the Subaru Crosstrek, the manufacturer’s funky subcompact SUV, was in 2018. According to the calendar, we’re due for a brand-new Subaru soon, but it might be another year or two before we see one. The 2023 edition of the Subaru Crosstrek is pretty similar to the Crosstrek you know and love.

Although there’s little by way of mechanical or design upgrades, there is one exciting new launch this year. Subaru added a new trim level for the 2023 Crosstrek: the Special Edition. This all-new trim borrows most of its engineering and features from the Premium trim. However, it offers distinctive styling that sets it apart. The Special Edition Crosstrek comes in Desert Khaki, a soft beige paint color that harkens to outdoorsy adventures like dirt roads, safaris, and desert hikes.

It comes with 17-inch gray wheels you’d otherwise have to swing for the Sport trim to get. There are unique touches on the inside of the Special Edition Crosstrek, too, like special red and black cloth seats and attention-grabbing high-contrast stitching. An 8-inch infotainment touch screen also comes standard on the Special Edition, despite costing extra on other trims.

Other than the Special Edition trim, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek has all the engineering and features of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Expect the same adaptable, practical design and performance that’s made this small SUV a long-standing hit with drivers.

All trim levels offer a base of 20.8 cubic feet of cargo space, except for the Hybrid, which offers 15.9 cubic feet. When you lower the 60/40 split-back folding rear seats, however, cargo volume expands to 55.3 cubic feet or 43.1 cubic feet in the Hybrid.

Cloth upholstery is standard on all trims except for the Limited and Hybrid, which each come with leather-trimmed seats. Leather-wrapped steering wheels come with all models above the Base trim.

The base engine on the 2023 Crosstrek is a 2-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Upper trims, however, replace it with a 2.5-liter version that cranks the power up to 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive comes standard on all models, setting the Crosstrek apart from many competitors in its class.
