Importance of Regular Subaru Maintenance

Hiley-Subaru-Service

Bringing your vehicle in for regular maintenance is one of the best things you can do. For one, keeping up with maintenance makes it less likely that your Subaru will break down unexpectedly. If you’ve ever found yourself stranded on the side of the road or unable to start your car in the morning, you know how frustrating it can be. Getting regular maintenance can help save you a lot of stress in the future.

Besides stress, you can also save money. It’s often more expensive to repair a vehicle than maintain it. In addition, you don’t have to worry about the extra costs of towing your vehicle or renting a car while yours is being fixed. Finally, regular maintenance helps to retain the value of your Subaru. Potential buyers will want a car free of major repairs and in good condition. Bringing your Subaru in for maintenance can help with both of these things.

Oil Changes

An oil change is the most common service you’ll need for your Subaru. Some sources recommend changing the oil in your vehicle every 3,000 to 3,750 miles, though others say you can last longer, between 5,000 and 7,000 miles. The best time to change your oil may depend on your vehicle’s make, model, and age. Check your owner’s manual to see if your car has a suggested time frame you can follow. If you’re still under warranty, you may also need to change your oil based on its requirements.Car service mechanic working on automobile engine repair

During an oil change, a service technician flushes out the old oil, which may have degraded over time. The technician then replaces your vehicle’s old oil with new oil, which allows the car to operate efficiently and prevent engine damage.

Minor Service

The next recommended service is called a minor service update. Subaru recommends bringing your vehicle in for a minor service every 7,500 miles. The minor service package includes the oil change mentioned above, along with replacing the engine filter, topping off any low fluids, and ensuring proper tire pressure. The minor service also includes a multi-point inspection of the rest of the vehicle, which can help detect any issues that could lead to larger problems if left unattended.

If you don’t drive your vehicle frequently, it may take a while before you accumulate the necessary miles for the 7,500 intervals. However, even though you’re not driving your vehicle often, it can still experience issues. This is why it’s also recommended that you bring your vehicle in for servicing every 3.75 months or every 7,500 miles, whichever comes first.

Intermediate Service

After the minor service, there’s the intermediate service. Subaru recommends bringing your vehicle in for intermediate service every 15,000 miles or every 15 months, whichever comes first. Along with the services included in the minor service package, some other items are included in the intermediate service:

  • Tire rotation.
  • Brake inspection.
  • Battery inspection and service.
  • Wiper blade replacement.
  • Air filter replacement.
  • Check and attend to any open vehicle recalls.
  • Assess any check engine codes.

Just like the minor service, the intermediate service comes with a full multi-point inspection. Between the checks included with the intermediate service and the multi-point inspection, you can rest easy knowing everything with your vehicle is in good shape.

Major Service 1

The first major service you’ll need for your Subaru is at 30,000 miles or 30 months, whichever comes first. This is a more comprehensive service package than the intermediate service, and it’s designed to help vehicles that have now accumulated a significant amount of mileage. Some of the things included with this first major service are:

  • Spark plug replacement.
  • Transmission fluid flush.
  • Differential fluid service.
  • Brake fluid service.
  • Lube locks and hinges.

Subaru also recommends bringing your vehicle back for this same service at the 90,000-mile or the 90-month mark. Between the two Major Service 1 trips, you’ll want to bring your vehicle in for Major Service 2.

Major Service 2

At the 60,000- and 120,000-mile marks, or at the 60- and 120-month marks, it’s time for Major Service 2. This service includes many items from Major Service 1 and the Intermediate and Minor services, along with a few additional tasks. Some of the recommended services at this point include:

  • Inspection of the camshaft drive belt.
  • Inspection of wheel bearings.
  • Inspection of fuel lines and system operation.
  • Inspection and top off of differential fluid.
  • Inspection and top off of transmission fluid.
  • Check axle boots and shafts.
  • Check the operation of the clutch system.
  • Inspection of steering and suspension systems.
  • Inspection of the cooling system.
  • Replace engine coolant.

Timing Belt Service

Finally, there’s the timing belt service. Subaru recommends bringing your vehicle in for timing belt service every 105,000 miles. The timing belt is an important component of your vehicle. If it breaks, you could end up with very costly repairs. This is one of the more important services to remember, so be sure to keep an eye on the odometer when your Subaru gets close to 105,000 miles so you can schedule a timing belt service.
